WHAT WE DO

Nurturing Potential and Building Futures Together

What We Do

At WE CARE, we are dedicated to empowering marginalized communities in Northern Kenya, particularly focusing on children with disabilities. Our primary objective is to ensure that these children have access to quality education, which we believe is a fundamental right and a powerful tool for transformation. Through targeted initiatives, we aim to break down barriers that prevent children with disabilities from attending school and participating fully in society.

One of our key projects is to facilitate educational access for children with visual impairments in Isiolo and Marsabit counties. We work closely with local schools, such as the Kambi ya Juu Integrated School, to provide necessary resources and support for both students and teachers. This includes supplying learning materials like Braille machines and conducting training for educators on inclusive teaching practices. By creating a supportive and accessible environment, we empower these children to pursue their academic dreams and develop essential skills for their future.

In addition to education, we prioritize community advocacy and awareness programs. We conduct workshops and outreach efforts to educate families about the rights of children with disabilities and the importance of inclusive education. Our advocacy extends to addressing harmful cultural practices such as FGM, which disproportionately affect girls in our communities. By raising awareness and promoting dialogue, we aim to change mindsets and encourage positive cultural shifts that support the well-being of all community members.

We recognize that economic empowerment is vital for sustainable change. To support families of children with disabilities, we provide training and resources for entrepreneurship, enabling parents to start small businesses and improve their financial stability. Our holistic approach ensures that families are equipped to support their children's education and well-being, creating a supportive ecosystem that nurtures growth and resilience.

Collaboration is at the heart of our work, and we partner with various organizations, including the Horn of Africa Institute and the Red Cross Society of Kenya, to amplify our impact. Through these partnerships, we mobilize resources and create synergies that enhance our ability to serve the community effectively. By working together, we strive to create a more inclusive and equitable society, where every individual has the opportunity to thrive and contribute to their community.

Climate Change and Persons with Disabilities (PWDs)
Vulnerability to Disasters: Climate disasters can place PWDs at greater risk, as they may face challenges in evacuating quickly in situations like floods or during periods of extreme heat.
Accessibility in Climate Action: Inclusive disaster response is essential, with accessible shelters, early warning systems, and transportation options tailored to meet the needs of PWDs.
Health Impacts: The effects of climate change may worsen health issues for PWDs, increasing exposure to respiratory conditions or limiting healthcare access during severe weather events.

Drug Abuse and Its Effects on Persons with Disabilities (PWDs)
Higher Risk of Substance Use: Some PWDs may be more susceptible to substance abuse due to challenges like mental health issues or feelings of isolation.
Access to Treatment: Many PWDs face obstacles when seeking addiction recovery, highlighting the need for accessible and disability-friendly treatment options.
Community Support: Strong support networks are crucial in preventing and addressing drug abuse among PWDs, providing the necessary help and resources.

Peacebuilding and Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs)
Impact of Conflict on PWDs: Conflicts can pose unique challenges for PWDs, such as limited access to accessible refugee camps and increased risks of violence.
Role in Peacebuilding: Including PWDs in peacebuilding efforts is vital, as they bring unique insights and advocate for a more inclusive society.
Rehabilitation and Support: Programs aimed at helping PWDs rebuild and recover are essential, especially in areas recovering from conflict.

Spiritual Growth
As part of our commitment to holistic well-being, We Care Kenya CBO promotes spiritual growth by distributing audio Bibles to blind students, teachers, and visually impaired members of communities in Northern Kenya. Recognizing that many individuals in these regions cannot access written scriptures due to visual impairment or illiteracy, the audio Bibles offer an accessible and meaningful way to engage with God’s word. This initiative not only nurtures faith but also brings hope and encouragement to marginalized groups, fostering a sense of inclusion and spiritual empowerment regardless of physical limitations.

Youth Training
We Care Kenya CBO actively supports youth development through targeted training programs that emphasize the inclusion of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs). These sessions focus on building skills in entrepreneurship, digital literacy, and life skills to enhance employability and self-reliance among young people, especially those living with disabilities. By involving both disabled and non-disabled youth in shared learning environments, the program promotes understanding, reduces stigma, and creates opportunities for collaboration. This inclusive approach ensures that every young person, regardless of ability, has a fair chance to contribute meaningfully to society.
